Ingredients
Scale
- 2 slices of sourdough or white bread
- 1 can (5 oz) tuna, drained
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp diced celery
- 1 tbsp diced red onion
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp fresh dill or chives, finely chopped (optional)
- 2 slices sharp cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
- Prepare Tuna Filling:
In a medium bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, Dijon mustard, and herbs (if using). Mix until well combined. - Assemble Sandwich:
Spread butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer a slice of cheese, a generous scoop of tuna filling, and another slice of cheese. Top with the second bread slice, buttered side facing out. - Grill the Sandwich:
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is fully melted. - Serve and Enjoy:
Slice the sandwich in half and serve immediately. Pair with chips, a pickle, or a side salad for a complete meal.
Notes
- For a spicier twist, add a few slices of jalapeño or a dash of hot sauce to the tuna mixture.
- Swap sourdough for rye or whole wheat bread for a different flavor profile.
- For extra crunch, lightly toast the bread before assembling.
